Caroline Wozniacki officially finished 2012 in the WTA top 10 after making the finals of the Qatar Airways Tournament of Champions in Sofia, Bulgaria. Wozniacki did not claim the Sofia title despite being the top seed contestant. She fell victim to an upset at the hands of the former world number three, Nadia Petrova, who shot up to the 12th rank after registering an unbeaten run in Bulgaria.
Wozniacki stated, “Nadia played very well. Her service games were tough, and in the rallies I tried to push her back and make her move, but it just didn’t go my way. In the first set I felt like we had a lot of close games, but in the second set I was forcing myself too much and made too many unforced errors.”
The Dane further added, “I would have loved to win today, but I didn’t, and I’ve had a good week. I played some good tennis during the week, which I’m very happy about.” Four wins for the 22-year-old Dane in the tour of Sofia yielded her a spot in the WTA Top-10. She swapped places with the number one Frenchwoman, Marion Bartoli, who once had an opportunity to be the alternative player for the Women Tennis Association Championships that was contested in Istanbul.
Wozniacki claimed her first title of 2012 in Seoul where she grabbed the Hansol Korea Open title and coupled it with a quarter-final show at the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo. She marched on and won the Kremlin Cup in Moscow and her semi-final victory at Tournament of Champions confirmed her comeback in the Top-10 players at the end of the season.
