Caroline Wozniacki pulled out of her second-round match at the Italian Open in Rome, putting her participation at the French Open in doubt.

The sixth seed was losing 6-4 4-0 to Spain’s Anabel Medina Garrigues when, having called her trainer on to court during the first set, she finally retired from the match.

Wozniacki withdrew suffering from a respiratory illness, and with the start of the French Open less than a fortnight away there are fears that the former world number one will recover in time.

The 21-year-old’s withdrawal means that, should China’s Li Na reach the semi-finals in Rome, she will not be among the top eight seeds at Roland Garros. The reigning French Open champion progressed after beating Czech Republic’s Iveta Benesova 6-1 7-5.

Medina Garrigues will face either Serena Williams or Nadia Petrova in the third round.

Other seeded players to lose were third-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska and seventh seed Marion Bartoli, who respectively lost 6-4 4-6 6-1 to Petra Cetkovska and 6-3 6-1 to Julia Goerges.

Home competitor Flavia Pennetta is through after beating USA’s Sloane Stephens 6-2 6-3.

MADRID — Serena Williams overcame a sluggish start to beat Caroline Wozniacki 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 Thursday and reach the Madrid Open quarterfinals.

Williams hit the net on three straight points in her opening service game and then didn’t put up much resistance in the rest of the first set. But she broke Wozniacki at love in the fifth game of the second and ripped a forehand return winner for another break that put her ahead 4-3.

Wozniacki hit a shot long to go down 2-0 in the decider, and Williams cruised to victory in a matchup of former top-ranked players.

Williams improved her record to 10-0 on clay this season with her third win on Madrid’s unorthodox blue-clay surface.

Former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, trashed the German starlet, Mona Barthel, in straight sets at the Mutua Madrid Open 2012 on Tuesday. She jolted down a 6-4, 7-6(2) victory against the 21-year-old German to breeze into the round of 16 at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Mandatory event held in Madrid.

The Danish number one, Wozniacki, showed top notch skills to outfox Barthel in one hour and 34 minutes. The Dane squandered double match points at 6-4, 5-4 40-15 but pulled out the match after outshining her rival in the tie-breaker.

After plucking this match, the sixth seed not only improved to a 2-0 lifetime in the head-to-head series against Barthel but also powered into the third round where the American number one, Serena Williams, awaits her.

“I saw Mona play a few times this year and she’s playing well, and I played her in Copenhagen last year, so I knew what I was going up against,” the ecstatic Dane was quoted afterwards. “She plays fast and strong, and I knew there wouldn’t be a lot of long rallies. I had to serve well, return well, stay in there and just fight.”

Wozniacki made a strong start at Park Manzanares and drew the first blood in the third game to jump to a 3-1 lead. In spite of losing her edge in the sixth game, she capitalised on another break chance in the very next game and consequently bagged the opener with a 6-4 win.

Sixth ranked Dane kept her rhythm in the following set and earned the desiderated break in the opening game to take the initial lead. Despite gifting away her serve in the proceeding game, she broke her opponent’s serve again in the fifth game and was serving for the match in the tenth game. However, she failed to capitalise on double match points she clobbered and subsequently imposed a tie-breaker. Wozniacki leaped to a 4-0 lead in it before sealing the set with a 7-6(2) score line.

Next in line for Wozniacki is her fellow former world number one, Williams. The American crushed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia with a breadstick.

Former World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki survived an injury scare to book her place in the second round of the Madrid Open, seeing off Ksenia Pervak in a marathon three-setter.

The sixth-seeded Dane, yet to win a title in 2012, battled on despite rolling an ankle to eventually prevail 7-6(7) 3-6 6-4 in a match lasting more than three hours.

Wozniacki has endured an inconsistent start to the season and her propensity to show lapses in concentration during a match was evident again as she struggled to keep a determined Pervak under wraps.

Wozniacki has often in the past been accused of not having the mental strength needed to win a grand slam but, while that may be the case, she showed huge resilience to save 14 of the 22 break points she faced.

The first set saw eight breaks of serve – four for each player – and it needed a monumental effort in the ensuing tiebreak for Wozniacki to pinch it. The second set proved a far tighter affair, with Pervak edging matters to force a decider, where Wozniacki held her nerve to seal her passage into the second round.

My active and busy lifestyle can be harsh on my feet and often causes blisters; that’s why I started working with COMPEED® in 2011 and now I’m very excited to have my very own blister patch hitting the stores.

On the court, a blister can be a nightmare for a tennis player as it can stop you from playing at the top of your game. Off the court, when I wear my heels out a blister can definitely ruin an otherwise fun night.

The COMPEED® patch I created is designed to be placed just below the Achilles tendon so it’s super discreet, and is great whether you are using it to cover up an existing blister or avoid a new one.

COMPEED® is a great option to treat and prevent blisters. I love the patches; they certainly help me to stay unstoppable, both on and off the court!

Caroline’s blister patch is now available in the UK, France, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Poland, Czech Rep and Slovakia.
